Hot Tips for Humboldt's Cool Climate

After living in Humboldt for many years some things become more obvious. So in order to help out those newcomers or oldcomers who may want some helpful tips we put together this list:
1. Fill your salt shakers with 50% rice to keep them from turning to rock salt.
2. Wear Layers. If you are leaving in the morning wear at least 3. If you are leaving in the middle of the day wear one and bring two ;)
3. South facing windows are ideal for getting through those winter blues.
4. Make sure you've got a good doormat.
5. If you're feeling a little chilled by the fogged out summer sun hit the hills for the heat. The river in Willow Creek is ideal.
6. If you don't have a rain guard on your fixie bike you'll get a nice big brown streak your back.
7. Get your Wellies on!!
8. Throw a bucket of hot water on icy windows in the morning. They won't freeze ;)
9. You want rain gear. Umbrellas are useless.
10. The mushrooms grow in October and November.
11. Dehumidifiers rule!
12. Wood stove heat is great for keeping a dry climate. If you can acquire one that is ideal.
13. Keep everything you can in glass jars. Things go bad much quicker in moisture and the ants can attack quick!
14. Find a place where the sugar ants don't roam. IT IS Possible. Don't fool yourself that it is not.
15. Wash dishes daily and wash out cans, bottles etc.
16. Put dew removers in all of the closets.
17. 50/50 Mix of Water and Bleach will kill most green / black molds. Spray on or use sponge with gloves.
18. Check the deep dark corners often for mold.
19. Outside walls will always be moister and grow mold easier.
20. It's rainy from Oct 15 to March 15. It's foggy all summer long. The best months are July and August for heat.
21. If you seek summer heat or winter cold just head east.
22. Take January and February off and go to Hawaii. It's just plain nasty most places besides the islands.
