The Quickly Spreading Wave of Nanofarms, Indoor Plantations and Cannabis Cafes
November 10, 2009
A couple of days ago I was talking to my buddy Ted over in North Dakota. Always on top of his game, he once again sent me to a story that I hadn't heard yet. No it was not the same old Arcata is Pot City USA that he scooped before. This time it was about the thriving new pot mecca of Hayfork? Hayfork? I scoffed. He let me know he wasn't shitting me. Apparently Hayfork is quickly becoming the next Pot City USA.
Hayfork now has the distinct possibility of taking Arcata's spot as the new nanofarm and indoor plantation capital of California. It is already being called "Northern California's pot paradise" by High Times. Apparently in Hayfork the streets are overflowing with sticky green bud. Even the local football games are embraced with the sweet wafting smells of marijuana. The herb as a sign of peace is single-handedly turning the economic wasteland of Hayfork, in remote bumblefuck central Trinity County, into a thriving real estate locale for cannabusiness tycoons. Hayfork, like Arcata, is quickly becoming a new vastly profitable mecca for the pot growing elite.
All of this speaks towards the rapidly changing political climate in California. And not only the political climate of the politicians but of the internally fracturing Cannabusiness and Dispensary folks as well as the undecided attitudes of the nanofarms and indoor plantation growers. California is on the new leading edge of marijuana dispensaries, cannabis cafes, nanofarming technologies and indoor cannabis plantations. There are over 600 dispenaries in the North Bay Area alone I was told recently. And there is now over 2000 in the state. Oakland, once the former hood of 1990s rappers like Too Short, is now reinventing itself into Oaksterdam - a california equivalent to Amsterdam with it's cannabis cafes and marijuana university. The have marijuana dispenser vending machines in Los Angeles. And as well all know the northern california counties have become the agricultural homeland of nanofarms and indoor plantations for the whole movement.
And while most would have you believe this movement is only mostly based around marijuana being grown for medicinal uses we are also informed by local radio ads that the indoor blue lights are great for your skin in the winter months and that marijuana is high in Omega-3 proteins which also helps the complexion ;) So we also look more beautiful as we grow our high-grade marijuanas. That is some good marketing! But everybody already knows how beautiful Northern Californians are don't they?
I've watched little Arcata and Humboldt County be on the forefront of many waves during my 11 years hear. First there was the organic farmers who led the standard until the government adopted organics as a brandname and took it away forever more. Lately the environmental movement has lost steam (look at the sad state of affairs of the North Coast Environmental Center) and this is much more to do with the world in general hopping ono the Save the Earth movement. Even Hannah Montana or Miley Cyprus (one of them) is singing about it. Now everything is green and good and happy (since the 10 major corporations made their formal deal in January 2007).
Heck Arcata even used to have the market on the metaphysics game too. They used to be all Meditation, Yoga, Reiki, Shamanic Journeying, Tai Chi Gung, Colloidal, Acidopholus, Candida. But now everyone knows about the eastern philosophies and many are hopping onto the new Law of Attraction movement (and rightfully so). It's getting a bit hard to get a eastern spiritual word in edgewise when north american now has it's own traveling sage. And it's quite obvious that Abraham-Hicks isn't coming to little Arcata anytime soon! It's all Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz, Sedona, Maui and Monterrey, Tahita, Mexican Riviera, Ay Ay Yay!
And so while I like Hayfork, in general ( I must admit I have never actually made it to Hayfork. I have tried but been stopped by the crazy mountain passes and a head full of hop), I don't want to see my special little Arcata Pot City USA go the wayside of Orick and it's former glory. If we aren't careful, all of our lovely local grower friends will pack up their bags and head for the sunnier happier more peaceful paradise of Hayfork. They will drop this housing market and local economy to the floor where it should rightfully belong along with the sad state of the apartments and homes in the area. Is this what we want?! I say no Arcata. Let's say Yes to our destiny! Let's embrace the creation of our lacksidaisical attitudes! Let's remember our rebel roots!
