Eureka is the County Seat for Humboldt. It houses all of the government buildings, a very prominent Jail and Courthouse and most of the other important facilities for the County. It is also a former port city that has a small marina on nearby Woodley Island for sailboats and fishing boats. Eureka is known for it's Old Town pavillion of stores, cafes and restaurants. Parking can be difficult but the stores are worth it. There is also a mall on the southern end of the town called the Bayshore Mall.
Opinions vary about the benefits the city has to offer. It houses most of the chain stores and franchises that the other surrounding towns have tried so hard to resist. It is also considered by many to be the most unseemly and run down of the major towns. Those who live in Eureka often talk much better of the city than others, especially the Arcatans who will oftentimes do anything in their power to avoid the dreaded "10 mile trip to Pewreka"
There are some major attractions in Eureka. The Carson Mansion is an extremely famous Victorian building that houses the exclusive private Ingomar club. There is also the Sequoia Park Zoo and the Morris Graves Art Museum. Many of the buildings in Eureka are painted with famous murals by Duane Flatmo
