Garberville and Redway are twin towns that are the home of what many call Souther Humboldt or So Hum. These 2 towns are almost the exclusive facilities for all of the surrounding towns on the Avenue of the Giants and other parts of Southern Humboldt. These include : Miranda, Benbow, Myer's Flat, Weott, Honeydew, Shelter Cove, Briceland, Whitethorn and others. The Mattole River runs through the Valley that separates the two.

Garberville is the larger of the 2 towns and is home to the shopping, stores, cafes and restaurants. It rests high on a hillside that overlooks the Southern edge of the County. Garberville is famous for it's annual Redwood Run bikerfest. It is also the best lodging destination for those exploring the famous Redwood Highway or the Lost Coast.

Redway is home to a small strip of stores and the famous Mateel Community Center- a renowned music and entertainment venue that has housed many great concerts in the past. It is also part and parcel to the Reggae on the River Music Festival. After a proprietary scurmish in 2007-8 there is now also a sister event called Reggae Rising . There has been great debate in recent years about the state of Redway's progressive mateel population. Much of this is due to the tremendous rise in the non-local growers of marijuana in the hills outside the town.
